When note acceptance pays for itself
Notes matter most where product prices are higher — coffee, fresh food, PPE, larger drink formats and multi-buy sites. If your average vend is above about $3.50, note acceptance usually pays for itself within months.
It also matters in clubs, pubs and event venues where people carry notes rather than coins.

Does the machine give change from a $20 note?
Yes, provided the coin mechanism has loaded change tubes. Note acceptance without a healthy change float causes complaints, so the two are usually maintained together.
Why does the reader reject notes?
Usually a dirty or dusty sensor path, or a full stacker. Cleaning the path and emptying the stacker fixes most rejections.
